Exploring and experimenting: two cornerstones of the innovation process

The world of mobility is evolving at a rapid pace. At Keolis, we witness it every day.
Technological innovations, new modes of transportation, environmental challenges, demographic shifts… there are countless perspectives from which to view the future of mobility. With Open Explore, we are dedicated to better understanding these changes and what they mean for our passengers and our teams.
We believe that exploration and experimentation are the two pillars of any innovation approach. By identifying today the major trends shaping tomorrow’s mobility, we can undertake innovative projects that are closely aligned with regions and their communities. By gathering feedback from travelers, residents, and Keolis teams, we are envisioning a mobility that is increasingly inclusive, responsible, and integrated into local communities.

Five Trends Shaping the Mobility of Tomorrow

We have identified five major trends that are shaping the mobility of tomorrow and anticipating shifts in our professions:

  1. Urbanization and rising territorial inequalities: Ongoing urbanization is driving ever-greater demand for reliable, flexible, and environmentally responsible mobility services. At the same time, territorial inequalities between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas are widening. These two trends compel us to design mobility adapted to everyone and to every need. 2. Individualism and personalization: In a society that increasingly favors individual behaviors, and where confidence in a shared future is fading, deploying public mobility offerings becomes a challenge. The issues are numerous: restoring trust, personalizing the offer, empowering travelers, and better addressing situations of vulnerability. [Discover the trend in detail]

  3. Decarbonizing mobility: The transition toward more environmentally friendly mobility is a deep-seated trend. It involves developing lower-emission transport solutions, as well as evolving perceptions of active and low-impact modes. These challenges must be integrated into territorial planning policies. [Discover the trend in detail]

  4. Demographic change: Between declining birth rates and an overall aging population, new challenges are emerging for mobility services: implementing a more flexible, personalized transport offer adapted to populations that are less constrained yet sometimes more vulnerable, and adapting the working conditions of our employees. [Discover the trend in detail]

  5. New technological frontiers: Artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous mobility, quantum computing… today’s technological acceleration is profoundly reshaping everyday behaviors—and therefore everyone’s mobility. In the medium term, integrating these technologies into our offerings will revolutionize passengers’ daily lives, as well as how our teams work. [Discover the trend in detail]

An approach based on open exploration and dialogue

Based on exchanges with stakeholders in the field—teams, subsidiaries, regions, passengers—and Keolis Group partners, Open Explore strives to give a voice to all mobility professions: operations, maintenance, HR, IT, marketing, communication, innovation, CSR, etc., in order to identify the major changes that will define our missions tomorrow.

By basing our approach on cognitive and behavioral sciences, working closely with travelers and teams, we aim to better understand the experience, perception, and daily lives of the different audiences we approach.

In 2025, Open Explore conducted a study on the experience of on-demand transport drivers with the aim of improving their working environment and optimizing their daily performance. This approach was firmly focused on understanding the skills required of on-demand transport drivers.

Open Explore complements the research conducted by the Keoscopie observatory led by the Keolis group.

Turn your region into a testing ground

The future of mobility is being built locally. We work with transportation authorities, citizens, and local partners to identify major mobility trends, experiment with the transportation of tomorrow, and lay the groundwork for larger-scale deployment.

What if your region also adopted our approach?
