KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) is playing a central role in raising awareness of anti-social and criminal behavior among young people. This innovative project, entitled “Victimless Crime”, uses virtual reality to educate young people about the consequences of their actions on public transport.

Beyond transport logistics management, KAM stands out for its commitment to the well-being and safety of the local community. By collaborating closely with the TravelSafe Partnership (TSP), Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), this flagship project aims to positively influence young people in Greater Manchester's schools and colleges. Through this partnership, KAM establishes itself as a pillar of regional educational support, being highly interested in social cohesion.

Advanced technology for a sustainable cause

The use of virtual reality transforms the message traditionally delivered by adults into an immersive and meaningful experience for young people. Through impactful scenarios, such as throwing projectiles at moving vehicles, participants experience the devastating effects of these actions. By highlighting local actors, the project aims to illustrate the significant impact of these behaviors on passengers and transport staff, thus encouraging increased awareness and responsibility among young people.

Beyond its remarkable impact on students and teachers, virtual reality is an additional argument for offering awareness-raising sessions in new schools. It also comes with a detailed presentation on crime, fare compliance and safety issues to reinforce the message.

"Interactive sessions like these maintain our students' interest and help them retain key messages."

A lasting effect in service of the community

Since its launch in November 2023, over 1 200 young people have participated in this initiative. Positive feedback attests to the program's effectiveness: constructive discussions emerge, prompting young people to reflect on their actions and promote a change in their behavior. With expansion planned into more schools in 2025, KAM explores new educational and participatory dimensions, transforming students into ambassadors of change through this innovative pedagogy.

An innovative approach to awareness

The virtual reality technique used by KAM, designed through the TravelSafe partnership, offers young people a realistic and impactful view of the consequences of their actions. Immersive 3D sequences, filmed locally, bring to life a story where a 14-year-old boy succumbs to peer pressure, illustrating the heavy weight of his decisions on his life and that of others. This initiative, funded by the Home Office, combines visual teachings with deep reflections among young people, allowing them to integrate lessons in a lasting and thoughtful way.

Next evolution of the program

Under KAM's dynamic leadership, the educational content continues to develop in collaboration with TfGM, Network Rail, and other key partners in the area. Additional themes such as sexual harassment and crime will be addressed, ensuring the virtual reality technology remains adaptable to new social challenges. KAM's goal is to ensure a safe, reliable, and sustainable transport network for all its users.

Through these efforts, KAM reaffirms its status not only as a transport operator but also as a committed community partner, ready to meet Greater Manchester's future educational challenges.
